Colorado is home to one of the coolest desert towns in the U.S., says Trip Advisor

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:45:19 GMT

In January, Travel + Leisure named Palisade among the most beautiful small towns in the U.S. But apparently, it isn’t just a sight for sore eyes. This week, Trip Advisor also gave a nod to the Western Slope destination as one of the coolest desert towns in the country. In something of a love letter to the American West, writer Nicholas DeRenzo spotlighted eight “fascinating desert hot spots that are anything but dry.”Trip Advisor gushed about Palisade’s fertile grounds for produce, shouting out Pêche Restaurant and the Palisade Peach Festival, as well as the abundant vineyards in the area. The best way to check out all the town has to offer, Trip Advisor said, is to travel it by bike. (We’ll add that hiking the desert trails nearby are also a fantastic choice in the spring.)Related ArticlesEntertainment | Pilots from Southwest, American and United are unhappy with their contracts. California condors face a new threat in their flight from extinction

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:45:19 GMT

The California condor is facing the deadliest strain of avian influenza in U.S. history, and the outbreak could jeopardize the iconic vulture with its 10-foot (3.05-meter) wingspan decades after conservationists saved the species from extinction. But nine newly hatched chicks, covered in downy white feathers, give condor-keepers at the Los Angeles Zoo hope that the endangered population of North America’s largest soaring land birds will once again thrive after 40 years of aggressive efforts. With fewer than 350 condors in the wild — in flocks that span from the Pacific Northwest to Baja California, Mexico — the historic outbreak means ongoing breeding-in-captivity and re-wilding programs like the LA Zoo's remain essential. The USFWS-led California Condor Recovery Program has been working with partners at the San Diego Zoo, Los Angeles Zoo and elsewhere to try to increase the California condor population. (KTLA)Over the past year and a half, millions of birds across the U.S. have died ...

United pilots picket for higher pay ahead of summer season

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:45:19 GMT

By David Koenig | Associated PressDALLAS — Just ahead of what could be a record-breaking summer travel season, pilots from one of the nation’s biggest airlines marched in picket lines at major airports on Friday as they push for higher pay.The United Airlines pilots have been working without a raise for more than four years while negotiating with airline management over a new contract. The pilots are unlikely to strike anytime soon, however. Federal law makes it very difficult for unions to conduct strikes in the airline industry, and the last walkout at a U.S. carrier was more than a decade ago.The coast-to-coast protests by United pilots come on the heels of overwhelming strike-authorization votes by pilots at American Airlines and Southwest Airlines. United pilots could be the next to vote, according to union officials.Pilots at all three carriers are looking to match or beat the deal that Delta Air Lines reached with its pilots earlier this year, which raised pay rates by 3...
